Tradies With True Grit, Local Roots & A Rich Legacy
Meet the Legends Behind the Wrench
Established in Lismore in 1903 by Norman Sidney and Charles Hacking, our business was built on skill and integrity. Five generations later, Sidney & Hacking has become a Northern Rivers mainstay, handling everything from gutter restorations to commercial kitchen installations, and yes, we’ve likely fixed Nanna’s roof, too! Through every Lismore challenge, our commitment to the community and a deep pride in delivering quality work, every time, has kept us going. Want to dive deeper into our story? Check out this Sunday Profile article from The Lismore App that highlights our legacy and local impact.
Over a Century of Keeping Lismore Flowing
A 120-Year Timeline of Trust
From humble beginnings in 1903 to navigating floods, expanding services, and embracing innovation, this timeline highlights the key moments that have shaped our family legacy. Discover how five generations have built a trusted name that locals rely on day in, day out.
1903
The Beginning
Norman Sidney and Charles Hacking open a small plumbing and sheet metal shop on Keen Street, Lismore. They started with parasol repairs, grain cans, and good old-fashioned grit.
1913
Hacking Heads Home
Charlie Hacking returns to England, while Norman carries on, laying the groundwork for generations of Sidneys to come.
1920s
New Digs
The business purchases land and builds a new workshop, which coincidentally is the very spot where Daley’s Homewares stands today. The iconic milk can still sits on the roof.
1970s
Built to Beat the Floods
After years of hauling tools and fittings upstairs every time the Wilsons River threatened to spill over, Sidney & Hacking added a second storey to their Keen Street building to keep operations above floodwaters and protect their equipment during Lismore’s frequent floods.
1981
Andrew Joins the Crew
Fourth-generation plumber Andrew Sidney joins the family business. With this addition, the business expands to offer copper, brass, plumbing, air conditioning services, and fabrication.
1988
A Fresh Start on Higher Ground
Sidney & Hacking move to 21 Habib Drive, South Lismore. With this big move, they traded the town noise for space, ease, and flood resilience.
1999
A New Generation Takes the Helm
Andrew officially takes over the business, buying out his father and uncle. Every cent goes into keeping the legacy alive.
2000s
From Pipes to Plate Passes
Sidney & Hacking expands into custom stainless steel commercial kitchens for restaurants, pubs, nursing homes, and hospitals. If you’ve eaten in Lismore, chances are you’ve benefited from their work.
2000s
Heritage Restored
As part of their deep ties to the community, Sidney & Hacking proudly restored the original spire of the Lismore Conservatorium, a piece first crafted in 1903. This nod to their origins stands tall as a symbol of craftsmanship and legacy.
2022
The Big Flood
Disaster strikes again in the form of six feet of water through the building. However, the crew remained resilient and rebuilt the shed and restored the machinery in under eight weeks.
2023
120 Years and Still Flowing
With Taylor Sidney, the fifth generation of the family, now back on the tools and carrying forward the legacy, Sidney & Hacking proudly celebrates 120 years of trusted service. From the foundations laid over a century ago to today’s modern innovations, the business remains in steady hands.
